Background

​

In order to help you understand the organization of X-deploymentRobot and the reasons for certain processes and operations we bring up a common scenario.

​

A team of developers, testers and business analysts (BA’s) work on several projects simultaneously. BA’s are designing guidelines and maps, developers build profiles and perform unit tests, testers are running their QA cycles, and all of them are writing some type of documentation. All of this is taking place in a staging environment made up of the following:

​

• one DEV server

• two QA servers

• two STAGE servers

• two PROD servers

 

With DEV server as a development server and either TFS or SVN as a source control system used by the team all of the software is versioned. One of the basic requirements for deployments is that most of the modules need to be promoted on a scheduled basis so that these activities would be synchronized with deployments of other systems like claims and enrollment processors.

In order to make this work in a coherent fashion manual tasks are performed by designated team members or by a specifically allocated full-time deployment technician who, from time to time fails at his/her task. The team analyses failures and concludes that their manual processes are flawed for a number of reasons:

​

• deployment technicians might be unavailable at times so the scheduled windows might be compromised

• approvals and rejections are might be missed or misplaced

• software components or artifacts might be omitted accidentally from the deployment packs

• all of the team member are prone to making mistakes as people generally are

• etc., etc.

 

A distributed DevOps tool, X-deploymentRobot comprises all of the manual tasks and follows a designed workflow to the letter and on schedule. Whatever is missing from the deployment pack is identified at the request time to allow the active participants to react right away instead of being notified of deployment failures and then reacting.
